2007-2025: The LASSE experience

LASSE was founded in 2007 by Esper Cavalheiro, who led the school for 18 successful editions, with continued financial support from the Brazilian League of Epilepsy (LBE) and the São Paulo State Research Agency (FAPESP), among other agencies and regional institutions.

All school editions (except for LASSE XV, held online due to the COVID pandemic) were hosted at the Santa Monica Hotel and Convention Center in Guarulhos, São Paulo, an environment conducive to productive exchanges among students and faculty members.

The school consists of daily lectures and workshops. In addition to addressing “the basics” (i.e., diagnostic, therapeutic, and experimental aspects of epilepsy), the school's title indicated a specific theme chosen for a more in-depth analysis of cutting-edge and sometimes controversial topics.

A hallmark of LASSE is its dynamic format, combining expert-led lectures from around the world with small-group activities where participants are tasked with designing original research proposals.

LASSE's collaborative and intellectually stimulating atmosphere has given rise to a vibrant and growing community of "LASSEans": organizers, faculty, and alumni united by their commitment to advancing epilepsy education and research across Latin America.

LASSE evolution

We are now shifting gears. Starting next year, LASSE will diversify into a family of Epilepsy Schools with a common identity, pillars, and spirit, each focusing on specific targets. LASSE-Advanced will inaugurate the series in 2026, with a course aimed at young professionals with a more advanced level of training. We trust you will join and support us on this journey!
